The Destruction of the Family

Regardless of what
part of the world families were located they all were comparatively
large, extended, and settled in a fixed location. The various work done
(even field work) might be generally viewed as cottage industries.
aside from natural disasters such as flood and drought or human
disasters such as wars and criminals, The rhythm of life was tied to
the seasons, the pace was measured, and family members (of all
generations) were heavily invested in their relationships with other
members of the family. The Industrial Revolution was perhaps the first major step in transitioning people away from what had been since creation until then a certain way of living. The previous centuries had seen the expansion of trade establish the framework of what would be a larger economy. The mechanization of manufacturing also saw the making of human labor into a commodity. As a result many things were reduced to their monetary worth. A mother was not able to make clothes for her family when her market value of labor could purchase many more factory made clothes than she could make on her own. Store clothes would not have a mothers love in them and her absence from the home further impoverished the family. First rail and then automobile transportation allowed people to become sort of nomadic. Being relocatable often disconnected families from each other, particularly the older generation who no longer had the access to pass on their wisdom and culture. Families headed by relatively young people were more vulnerable to accepting values, culture, and methods for their families that an older generation might have resisted. The generation raised with the automobile and inculcated with the mass production ideas of WWII mobilization fully accepted the industrial processing of children that public education was built around. Parents assumed that if they placed their children in this “machine” that when they came out, they would be able to “succeed” in life. They also had the same mechanical processing view of sending their children to Sunday School. Each subsequent generation became increasingly devoid of anything meaningful; to pass on to their own children such that the values of radio and TV became the conduits of culture, values, and morality. Many parents in their 50s and 60s begin to realize that their own youthful neglect of their children set them on a trajectory in life that made them captive to a world system that only desires to use them. They may think that they lost the opportunity to influence their children when the children left home at the age of 18. In reality, they lost the chance much earlier both because they had little to teach them themselves and school and media had already filled them even before age 10. Young Christian parents today that seek to raise their children with minimal damage from the world may wish to consider moving to a rural area, homeschool, restrict or edit media, and even house church. It may not be possible to create a large multi-generational family, however, much can be done to counter worldly influences. It starts with learning what these influences are and how they work. They were designed by Satan and are very effective. |
