Christianity was supposed to be about becoming like Jesus. We went in the wrong direction.

Notes From a Time Traveler

Many TV and movie stories advance their plots using the idea of traveling through time. As we are all traveling through time (one way and day by day), the idea can seem attractive. It would be nice to be able to, at the end of our journey through time, meet our younger selves and pass along what has been learned to our own benefit. However, this presumes that our younger selves would be open to hearing what out older selves would have to say. Since I am not able to actually talk to my younger self, I thought I would pass along thoughts to anyone younger if they might be of interest.

The frustrations and aggravations of today will fade into insignificance. What will grow is regret for having been unkind or missed opportunities to show kindness.

Learning was never about memorizing something but adding layer by layer to understanding such that the richness of life could be more deeply known and appreciated.

People are more important than things.

This world and its systems will never be made right. They are not fixable because there is that within us which is defective. Only in Christ is there any hope.

Having and raising children forces us to surrender our own childish selfishness.

True poverty is having nothing of value to teach your children.

An easy life is a shallow life.

Humility is essential for gratitude, seeing truth, and approaching God.

Riches like intellect can tie you to the world. Faith in Christ can set you free.

Common sense is actually wisdom which comes from God and sadly is not as common anymore.

Fun is a consumptive hunger that is never satisfied. Happiness lies in the selflessness of love.

Seeking popularity is like chasing a butterfly. If successful, you end up with a dead bug.

Skepticism is like a water filter. It can prevent swallowing something harmful.

Curiosity is a vital spark that drives a life of questioning and learning. It is often quenched by education.

Fear of being wrong can cripple. Mistakes and errors should be expected and if recognized and corrected quickly can greatly aid learning.

Just because it is what everyone is doing does not make it right.

Avoiding difficulty is not always the best choice.

Learning through the experiences of others can be less painful than learning through your own experiences, so ask questions of others.

Avoid combining alcohol and decision making.

Learn to appreciate substance over the superficial.

Truth and honesty may occasionally feel bad, but will never fail.

Exercise discernment so that one can quickly dismiss baloney. Not everything you are told is true.

Pride in self can blind. Pride in a group makes one vulnerable to manipulation.
