Christianity was supposed to be about becoming like Jesus.
We went in the wrong direction.

Are Christians Hypocrites?

What is a hypocrite?

Hypocrite = hypokrites = play actor
Two type of hypocrites - predatory and delusional
A predatory hypocrite as someone like a used car salesman who intentionally conceals the truth in order to profit from deception. A more common form is the delusional hypocrite. Because they are unaware that they are "playing a role". These people can speak with the sincerity and passion of the self-deceived.

The self-deceived

Key elements in the process of hypocrisy - pride, blindness, contempt
Luke 18:9-14 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Jesus warned His disciples about the danger of the "leaven" of the Pharisees. Luke 12:1 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

Pharisee Sadducee  Herodian
Jesus warned His disciples about the "leaven of the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Herodians.
"My future is secure because of what I have done". "My future is secure because of the position I hold". "My future is secure because of my influential friends".

How are Christians so easily led astray?

1John 2:15-16 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.  Public school, television, and a collectivized society plunge one into worldly entanglements that draw us ever further from our Lord.
1Thessalonians 5:19 Quench not the Spirit.  What the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Herodians all had in common was the elevation of self. Selfishness is of the flesh and in opposition to the Spirit.
2Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;  When people are not interested in truth, they turn to what makes them feel good. Much of Christianity has been turned into self-esteem, psycho-babble, and emotional self-stimulation.

How can Christians resist becoming hypocrites?
We need to recognize and repudiate the world and the flesh. We need to cling to Jesus and continue in His word.

Truth is the key to preventing and curing the blindness of hypocrisy John 8:31-32 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Christian
"My future is secure because I put it in the hands of Jesus".
