Christianity was supposed to be about becoming like Jesus.
We went in the wrong direction.

What is falling in love?

When one considers most movies, popular songs, and the themes of most books, it is easy to see how the idea that we fall in love is taken for a social norm. During adolescence the feelings of attraction, speculation, and even lust can combine in powerful ways that we have been led to see as "falling in love". The problem comes from the fact that if we can fall "in" love, we can also fall "out" of love.

The problem with chasing after things that give us good feelings is that it is a lot like drug addiction or alcoholism. The feelings do not last and we find that we start to crave new feelings. If we see other people in terms of the feelings they can give us it poisons our relationships in that we start to see in others that which we can consume.

If love isn't feelings?, what is it?

Love has long patience, is kind; love is not emulous of others ; love is not insolent and rash, is not puffed up, does not behave in an unseemly manner, does not seek what is its own, is not quickly provoked, does not impute evil, does not rejoice at iniquity but rejoices with the truth,  bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. - 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Love is selflessness

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. - John 15:13 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. - 2 Corinthians 5:15

Natural love

By nature humans are selfish. Yet even in this selfishness, we can see selfless love as some parents set aside their own interests for that of their children. In combat a man may sacrifice his life for his friends. There are glimpses of real selfless love that can be seen. This love can produce deep and profound feelings, but they are the effect. If someone has given or received this love, it is difficult to accept the sensations of lust, desire, attraction, and anticipation as a substitute.

Supernatural love

The reason we do not see much selfless love in the world is that our nature is so inclined towards selfishness that we are unable to truly break free from its grip. We need to have a new nature. This is where the salvation available in Jesus comes in. When a person becomes a Christian, he has a new life that is possible through his connection to Jesus. This is called being "born again". One of the advantages of this new life is a new nature of which we can partake.

Living love

Just because a person is a Christian does not mean that they show the same selfless love that Jesus did. The Christian life is supposed to be about growing and maturing in love and Christ-likeness. It is sad that so many Christians do not even understand this much less seek to follow the path of Christ.

The Christian who is led by the Spirit is not deceived by Satan to follow the path of false love (emotional stimulation). He finds plenty of emotional satisfaction within his family and with his brothers and sisters in Christ.

Pleasures of the flesh are transitory. Real love, selfless love, Christian love not only lasts, but builds and grows.
